Let’s explore Group Quarters.
According to the US Census, a household can be a single person or a group of people who live together – everyone who doesn’t live in a household
is living in a Group Quarters facility. Group Quarters house about two and a half percent of the total population.
They are broken into two categories: Institutionalized and Non-institutionalized. Institutional group quarters include correctional facilities
(prisons and jails as well as detention centers). Also included are nursing facilities (these could be nursing homes, psychiatric facilities,
or even in patient hospice facilities) and lastly juvenile facilities. Juvenile facilities can be group homes, residential treatment facilities
or correctional facilities – all designed specifically for juveniles.
Non-institutional group quarters are mostly college dorms and military barracks. They could also include homeless shelters
or group homes as well as residential treatment centers, and other facilities.
It’s easy to run data reports about households, income, language spoken and hundreds of other variables with GeoLytics demographic
data products – like our Census 2020 Demographic and Housing Characteristics data or the American Community Survey.
Remember, folks who live in Group Quarters are everyone who is not part of a Household.
