Profile Indexes

When profiling population and household demographics, we can tell what sort of person is most likely to inhabit this area, their education, wealth, race, age, etc. The profiles are based on the US average being 100. So for example, the total population in the US for 2007 is estimated to be 299,608,065 and the black population is estimated to be 38,265,587 -- this means the US is 12.77% black. If we then run a state, for example Arkansas, and the total population is 2,777,357 and the blacks are 437,115 so the percent of the population that is black is 15.74%.

So the ratio of 15.74 to 12.77 is 1.2326 -- therefore this profile shows it as 123 -- it is 123% of the US total. Likewise if we instead looked at Alaska, there are 667,306 people of whom only 24,470 are black or only 3.67%. The relationship between 3.67 and 12.77 is 0.287 or a profile score of 29 -- Alaska's proportion to blacks is only 1/4 that of the US in general.

The only time you need to be careful is with Income. Because income in Arkansas goes a lot further than income in Connecticut -- so you can still be very poor making $30K in Hartford and be doing ok making $30K in rural Arkansas.
